WORLD MAPS AND COUNTRY FACTS

Much like seeking out the relevant contact info for Embassies and Consulates, researching the particular country you wish to teach English in, is vital to a safe and productive year abroad. After all, nobody is going to spoon-feed you everything you need and want to know about a certain region, country, language or people! That responsibility ultimately rests upon you!

We have, however, assembled some standard basic tidbits on countries which are popular for demanding the need for English teachers such as: China, Poland, Spain, Czech Republic, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Russia, Turkey, Greece and a few others. The other, more obscure destinations, you will be able to find in the link provided below. It's the official CIA Factbook!

For specific info such as what teaching English is like or what living in a certain country entails, please see the descriptions below or try going to our Discussion Forums and search for other teachers' comments on avoiding common pitfalls and traps. Getting sound advice about the school or area you are going to is probably the single most important thing you need to do before accepting any job. Whether you are going to work or travel or do a bit of both, a few hours of research can save you a year's worth of headaches. Trust us on this one!

Job prospects
South Korea has a huge demand for ESL teachers and offers some of the highest paid ESL employment. Opportunities exist in the state sector but most teachers find themselves working in one of the thousands of hogwans (private language institutes) throughout the country. A large percentage of teachers are employed in Seoul or Pusan but there are employment possibilities in smaller cities and towns also. Many teachers complain of the working conditions but others feel that the high salaries counterbalance this. Teachers willing to work overtime can be earning up to $US 4,000 per month. Any qualified teacher with a Bachelor's degree should have no trouble finding employment.
